History ![]() Highlights of its first decade included performances of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky's 5th and Brahms's 2nd symphonies, Orff's Carmina Burana and the Requiems of Mozart and Verdi. For its tenth anniversary the society commissioned a new work by Judith Bingham, The Uttermost, and gave its premiere at Westminster Central Hall together with a performance of Beethoven's 9th symphony. The last few years have seen the orchestra performing works as diverse as Elgar's Enigma variations, the 5th symphonies of Sibelius and Shostakovich, Stravinsky's Firebird suite and Gershwin's An American in Paris. Choral repertoire has ranged from Monteverdi to Tippett, performed both a cappella and with the orchestra. In 1999, the combined forces gave a 125th anniversary performance of the Verdi Requiem and in 2001 they were joined by soloists from English National Opera for a programme including the Rossini Stabat Mater. Throughout its history, Lawyers' Music has promoted smaller scale concerts including a successful series of summer recitals in the City each July.
The society today ![]() The society gives five major concerts each year and promotes a variety of smaller events, both musical and social, and an annual residential weekend. Concert venues include St James's Piccadilly, St Paul's Knightsbridge, St Lawrence Jewry and Southwark Cathedral. Lawyers' Music is funded partly by members' subscriptions and ticket sales. However, we are also fortunate in having financial support from major law firms and a number of generous individuals. This enables the society to tackle large scale repertoire and to engage professional conductors and soloists, as well as making use of its members' talents. Among the conductors who have worked with the society are Jonathan Tilbrook, Paul Hoskins and Ben Pope.
How to join ![]() There are no auditions for choir or orchestra, but selection procedures occasionally have to be applied in relation to any over-subscribed woodwind and brass seats. Current annual subscriptions are £95 for orchestra and choir members, with a concessionary rate of £50 for the unwaged. Subscriptions are payable at the beginning of the season and members are encouraged to make their payments through Gift Aid. Music is generally provided free of charge. You can download the current membership form here.
